Our Public Engagement team runs a series of exhibitions in various venue throughout the year based around 'Materials Used in Jet-Engine'.
We work very closely with our partner, Museum of Science and Industry and Rolls-Royce to hold variety of events. Schools based in UK are always welcome to contact us to organise a visit to the University of Manchester and we can host variety of exhibits activities to the group of school pupils. You can find out about our next events on the date below: Wrexham Science Festival & Scientriffic @ Glyndŵr University, Wrexham
The jet engine of the future could be designed and created at this year's Wrexham Science Festival. Our exhibition will showcase how a jet engine works by allowing the audience to take a virtual 3D journey through its critical components. You will be able to see for yourself how innovative research combines modern materials with novel manufacturing techniques and rigorous testing procedures. Our tools allow you the opportunity to design your own environmentally friendly jet engine and also the chance to experience different types of materials with our innovative Augmented Reality tools.
This event is suitable for adults and children aged 11+. Free event: to reserve a place call Glyndŵr University on 01978 293473, email wsf@glyndwr.ac.uk, book online or call Wrexham Tourist Information Centre on 01978 292015. The 'Big Bang' fair event @ QEII, Westminster
In partnership with
Rolls Royce, our project exhibition team has the honour to
exhibit on Rolls Royce stand in this EPSRC supported event, The Big Bang fair.
As Rolls Rocyce is a major supporter, Rolls-Royce will have a conference stand and workshops promoting science, technology and engineering to young people and careers at Rolls-Royce. Our exhibition team will demonstrate the 'wow' factor to exhibit our 3D Journey Through A Jet Engine and Design A Jet Engine simulations. With a target audience of 5,000 pupils, 1,500 competitors and teachers, 500 senior politicians, influencers and VIPs, 2,000 parents, teachers and members of the public, the event should give you a major platform for your materials. Altogether around 9,000 attendees are anticipated over the three days. Discover Materials Science (AKA Science Speed Dating!) @ University of Manchester
Teenagers invited to test out some of Britain’s top jobs
120 pupils from 12 schools will arrive to University of Manchester to learn about materials science. The pupils will be split into small groups of 10 and each will visit 10 stands (jet engine session will take up 2 stands) over the course of the day. Stands to include 'show and tell items', enthusiastic researchers willing to share their experience and passion for the subject, video/live demonstration if possible/relevant.Groups of10 students will be brought to each stand and have 15 minutes to find out more about that particular researcharea. In this brief time, the pupils should see some example of "real-world" aspect of the research (demonstrating the job prospects in the discipline) and discover the breadth of exciting research activity within the School of Materials. 3rd-5th Feb-2009 (Skills NW @ Bolton Arena)
Teenagers invited to test out some of Britain’s top jobs
When you ask a seven year-old what they want to be when they grow up, they’re unlikely to say manufacturer or engineer, yet these will be top jobs of the future according to the government. And teenagers will have an opportunity to look into the future of Britain’s top jobs at the Make It in Manufacturing and Engineering Zone at the interactive Skills NorthWest careers event (3-5 February at Bolton Arena). At its recent Skills Summit, the government stated that in the new world economy quality jobs will come from a renaissance in manufacturing and the expansion of knowledge-based industries, such as engineering. Make It in Manufacturing is a campaign led by The Manufacturing Institute and its industry partners to encourage the next generation of talent to consider careers in industry. The Make It team is taking the second largest stand at the show to give young visitors a chance to have a go at hands-on activities, including creating taking a 3D journey through a jet engine, and designing a jet engine and finally test flying it, plastic moulding, mixing hair gel, making metal aircraft, soldering badges, laser-cutting key-rings and creating bags. Sid the robot will demonstrate the hi-tech world of manufacturing and engineering. There will also be some ‘dream machines’ on show, including Jaguar Land Rover’s latest Freelander and Hyde-based Martin Conquest’s innovative high performance motorcycle, which can be driven from a wheelchair. Meat processing company Dunbia will also be staging a cook-off challenge at the main stand. Recruitment business Kinetic plc will run a Who Want’s to be a Millionaire contest - manufacturing style – with a host of great draw prizes available to winners. Other partners involved in the zone include Aegis Tailored Protection, Aircelle, BAE Systems, Chemicals Northwest, Cogent, MBDA, McBride, Northwest Aerospace Alliance, Optare, Unison Engine Components and the University of Manchester Aerospace Research Institute. "We will be presenting the modern face of the sector at the Skills NorthWest,” said Nicola Eagleton-Crowther, Make It in Manufacturing campaign manager for The Manufacturing Institute. "By involving current apprentices and recent graduates who can talk enthusiastically about the opportunities that they’re being given we hope to communicate directly that manufacturing and engineering can provide rewarding and interesting careers that are at the cutting edge of technology.” Brian Barker, Head of Human Resources at Optare added: "As manufacturers, we need to attract young people by demonstrating the vast range of diverse careers that are available within the sector. We must dispel the notion that manufacturing is all bound for China and poorly paid, when the reality is in fact quite the opposite." Skills NorthWest is the region’s largest interactive skills and careers fair for 14-19 year-olds and will bring together regional skills sectors, businesses, education establishments and training providers with approximately 20,000 young people in a bid to inspire young people in their career choices. 29th-Jan-2009 (Manchester becomes educational centre for the jet engine)
Manchester - the home of the first British jet engine is set to
become a national centre for hands-on education about jet engines.
A new permanent interactive exhibition which opens this week at
MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) allows school children and other
visitors to see inside a state-of-the-art jet engine and design
their own engine. So you think You Can Design a Jet Engine showcases
the virtual 3D Rolls-Royce Trent 900 jet engine on the Airbus A380,
and aims to inspire young people about engineering.
This year's event is holding at the 1st-floor, main building in MOSI and we are again exhibiting all of our interesting full-suite exhibitions and you have also get the chance to speak to Rolls-Royce's young engineers. The new exhibition will be used as part of the education package MOSI offers for schools, as well as being open for other visitors to the Museum. The display, which has already been successfully showcased on stands at the Farnborough and Southport Airshows, has been designed by the University of Manchester and supported by EPSRC (Engineering & Phyiscal Sciences Reasearch Council) and Rolls-Royce. This state-of-the-art stereoscopic 3D journey through a Jet Engine allows young people to see how the engine works and to design a jet engine of their own to see if it can fly. We have found it to be a great way to showcase novel research going on within universities, and hopefully inspire engineers of the future! The exhibition opens on 29 January at MOSIs Air & Space Hall, Liverpool Road, Castlefield 18th-Oct-2008 (Family's Day @ MOSI)
