Recyclothéque
Recyclothéque is a new innovative way to learn about the concept of materials recycling. It combines the use of a recreational dance mat with a computer software program for the promotion of recycling of materials to pupils in schools and colleges.

Recycling is a key societal issue and therefore children need to better educated about the concept in order to achieve higher levels of domestic recycling. Pupils can have difficulties in connecting different aspects of previous experience/knowledge with new data in the classroom environment. The innovation is a form of experiential learning (‘learning by doing’) that can supplement traditional classroom methods, through activation of several sensory pathways during the learning experience.

What's in the tool?
The pair of dance-mat and software can be a supplement to traditional classroom methods. Experiential learning is particularly useful as this kind of engagement tends to be more focussed and absorbing for pupils than traditional/passive learning.

How is this tool linked to the schools curricula in UK ?
The Recyclothéque software is being made available for schools on CD-ROM with/without the dance mat as part of a set of interactive educational tools. The recycling game could be most obviously incorporated into KS1 and KS2 under the topics of Materials within the Science curriculum as well as within Geography under topics covering the Environment.

The single- or multi-player game offers:
  • Use of colour, sound and movements in teaching recycling significantly improves both short and long term retention.
  • The innovation could be employed within teamwork exercises.
  • Can be extended by children identifying their own items – for example recycling in the classroom and adding them to the game.

How do I get the software?
In the meantime, we are very keen to work with any partner (city council and schools) to be our initial trial, please contact us using the Feedback link.

If you are a school teachers or part of the city council recycling teams, we would like to hear from you because we would like to take Recyclothéque to your school or be part of your recycling activities. In doing so, we would be happy to have your institution / co-orportate's logo on the game.
